I can tell spring is here. Not because of the masses of people strolling the beach between St Kilda and St Clair each morning. Not because of the frisky sea lions. And not because our clocks went forward on Sunday. I can tell spring is here because when I was down the beach this past week, I saw not one, but two swimmers in the surf ... in their boardshorts.
It gets stranger. A few minutes later two stars of the English rugby team turned up at Steve's Esplanade Surf School at St Clair Beach and hired boards and wetsuits from him. Manu Tuilagi and Tom Wood then shared a few waves, before Manu decided his wettie was "too tight" and opted instead for boardies.
He surfed for about another hour and was soon joined in boardies by Tom. Epic. Two of the RWC's top players beating all the locals to the first boardies session of the year ... respect.
A lot of playful surf this week and capped off by a quick dash down the Catlins for a mate's 40th birthday bash. In between snow flurries we managed to find some of the most beautiful waves I have seen down that way. It's easy to forget that the Catlins is right on our doorstep, but it makes the perfect escape for the weekend. Especially if there is a bit of swell on the charts.
Daylight savings is now in full swing – time for after work surfs as those twilights get longer. Looks like a new swell tomorrow and some promising conditions Thursday and Friday for the city beaches.
