We're a lucky bunch to live in Dunedin and this past week is further proof. We're spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches and this week was all about the North Coast – that magical space between Taiaroa Head and Karitane. When the southerly blows, that coast turns it on – especially if there is any swell around.
I joined the daily pilgrimage a few times this week: once to one of the South Island's best point breaks, Murdering Bay, and twice to the stunning Aramoana Beach. I wasn't alone with nearly every young surfer in the city making the most of the school holiday swell.
The pilgrimage itself is a journey you can never tire of – threading together the charms of Port Chalmers, one of the best harbour-verge roads in the country and the full complement of sights and activity on the Otago Harbour.
Murdering Bay, despite its ghoulish name, has got to be one of the most beautiful spots on the coast and with green walls peeling down the point this week and warm, sunny days, it certainly deserves attention. I watched one set of six waves and saw a surfer on each. Not many places where you'll see that!
Most of Dunedin will be surfed out, which is a shame because this week will see the south coast cop another swell with westerly winds forecast to kick in from Thursday with the weekend looking prime. And then there is that game on Sunday night ...
