It has been such a long time since we've had significant rain that the midweek downpour almost felt tropical. It came with the intensity and volume of a tropical shower, but lasted for a few days. It gave the whole city a good wash and whipped the sea into a fury that soon became beautiful waves for the long weekend.
If you managed to get out amongst it you would have had your pick of any of the city beaches. Nearly every beach held quality surf at one time or another and it was the perfect build-up to the dreaded Sunday footy game.
I shunned the public for this one for fear I'd cry if we lost and so locked away in my house in front of the TV to study every second of the game with my family and friends. It was the most nerve-wracking 80 minutes I have ever experienced. Even when I knew the All Blacks had won I still felt emotionally drained to celebrate with the fervour the occasion deserved.
By Monday morning I had sorted myself out – mostly thanks to a day off and perfect blue waves everywhere you looked. That 23°C temperature (yes, recorded in my backyard while my kids ran under the sprinkler) just added to the tropical feel and that taste of the summer to come in Dunedin.
