November 1st 2011: Ritual

This is now our seventh Dunedin Light weekly photo report since we started and we've had such great feedback from our subscribers in all corners of the globe and from the many locals who are now signed up. The process for us is fast becoming a fun ritual of photographing the beaches and the people on them.

We're not the only ones with early morning beach-combing habits – it seems the onset of summer has many others out and about walking (with and without furry friends to drag them along), swimming, surfing or soaking up rays while sand squelches between their toes.

The morning ritual is a healthy one and sets you up for the rest of the day – like a dose of warm light mixed in with enough endorphins to get you through your working day. If you're lucky, you'll even witness a few scenes of nature at her best – moments that stay with you and become that happy oasis in your mind.

These are the moments we try to capture to share with you all. But I sometimes feel guilty when I experience these without my camera in hand – like this past Friday evening at Tomahawk Beach. Just me and two very good friends sharing a lefthander on dusk that was breaking like an Indonesian freight train. The colours in the glassy face of the waves were incredible greens and oranges and I have images of them burnt into my brain and of my friends' smiles as they ride these waves in the glow of the setting sun. Moments like these remind us all that we live in a pretty cool part of the world.

See you at the beach ... unless you're at Wingatui!
