November 8th 2011: Run to the beach

On Friday night I sat with my wife Rachael and watched snowflakes float down in front of our window. Only last week we were getting excited about the onset of summer, but we were lucky enough to get one last lash of winter's magical side. We know not everyone is into the snow, but we love it and this winter just gone has been one of the best to date.

Apart from getting excited by the falling snow for the sixth time this year, we also had a bit of surf up the Otago Peninsula. We missed the best sessions, but apparently Allans Beach was the gem in the crown.

Instead of chasing surf this past week we found ourselves playing around in the hills above the bays and beaches with a few off-road runners. These people are mad fit and most of their training takes place before most of us are even awake. They're up before the sun and banging out kilometres around the labyrinth of trails in the hills above the city and out on the peninsula. Glenn Sutton, who is training for the Kepler, even finishes back at his work ready to go at 7:30am.

Another to watch is Whitney Dagg (you can see her below) – she's studying nutrition and dietetics at the University of Otago, but her head is also in the hilly trails around the city. She's got the Kepler on her mind, too.

It's inspiring to know that there is this culture of the ultra fit out there and making the most of those amazing moments that take place in the sky as the sun rises above the horizon.

Might be time for a dawnie this week!

See you at the beach ...
