People often ask me: "it looks so beautiful in Dunedin every week – is it really like that?" I always tell them it is and I have proof because each week's images come from the very week before.
This issue that was put to the test when I was called away to a five-day job in Queenstown, which meant I had two days to photograph the images for this Dunedin Light.
Those two days were Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday I woke at 5:30am to watch the sun rise out of a perfectly clear horizon. It revealed that the swell had cleaned up over night – better still, St Clair Point, which doesn't always break nicely, was lined up and had overhead sets barreling through.
I spent two hours at St Clair Beach and felt like the luckiest man alive. The swell backed off over the day, but conditions remained perfect: offshore, hot and beautifully blue. I shot a few quick photos at Blackhead Beach in the evening to cap off a great day.
Thursday morning played out exactly the same with virtually no wind during the day making for hot conditions and plenty of swimming. We passed the test and can only conclude that you are almost guaranteed to get exciting weather in Dunedin.
I hope you managed to get out amongst it and enjoy the sunshine. If you didn't then build a day of relaxation at one of your favourite beaches into your schedule before Christmas. You deserve it.
