When you spend any length of time away from Dunedin you realise all the things you love about this place. I spent a week photographing mountain bikes and riding around the North Island recently and had a lot of fun, but I often found myself talking about Dunedin and what it was like to live here.
Whenever there were surfers in our midsts I had their ear early as we traded stories about epic sessions and moments of magic floating around in some wild lineup. I quickly learned that while we were having swell after swell marching around the corner this summer other places in New Zealand were not so fortunate.
I managed to get a boardies surf in at Mount Maunganui and it was small, but a lot of fun with about a dozen surfers every 100m from the main beach to Papamoa. It was a good vibe in the water, but they've done it tough: not much swell and lots of fallout from the stricken Rena including clumps of oil, affected wildlife and lots of sharks scavenging from the containers wasting away on the ocean floor.
When I flew back into Dunedin I could see miles of crisp, empty coastline with another clean swell wrapping into the bays and beaches from Karitane to Taieri Mouth – many of which I haven't even explored yet. It was exciting just sitting there with my face pressed hard against the window and daydreaming about the coastline far below.
This week served up more of the same: big, clean swells and some stunning days that would have made our friends up north very envious. I hope you managed to get to the beach on Saturday – what a stunner and not a cloud in the sky from dawn till dusk!
Big news for Dunedin Light is that we have launched an exhibition together with St Clair artist Jason Low. Titled "Oceans of Inspiration" our exhibition is on right now at Hotel St Clair's Chart Room. Drop in to the hotel reception and hang a left to check out the exhibition that features lots of ocean-inspired artwork (framed limited edition prints from Dunedin Light and some amazing oil on canvas originals from Jason Low). All the work is for sale and the gallery is open whenever reception is open (yep, you can even check it out on your way to dinner at Pier 24 or for a coffee at Café @ Pier). We hope you like it as much as we did putting it all together.
