This spell of crazy good weather coupled with swell after swell after leg-burning swell of magic surf conditions has been incredible. I hesitate to say it, but it does seem like the longest summer I can remember in Dunedin. Now I've said that it's likely to all end in a snowstorm that brings down powerlines, closes roads and turns the hot salt water pool into an ice rink.
You see, I have a habit of doing that – making a claim that is swiftly proven otherwise. Like when I said to my wife how well our two-year-old son was doing with nappy training. Bam! Solids and liquids gurgliing out of both legholes in his underpants and running down his legs.
Or when I had finished making a hardwood garden seat this weekend: "see, almost finished the whole job and haven't hit my thumb with the hammer once!" I boasted. Bam! Very next swing I smacked my index finger so hard I could hear bones crunching as blood squirted out a split on either side.
It also happened once when my brother had broken two surfboards clean through in as many weeks: "I don't know why you break so many, I haven't broken one in years...". Bam! Not one, not two, but three broken boards within the week.
So, I have become a little superstitious and that's why I'm not going to mention this incredible autumn weather too much more. For a week at least.
I managed to slip up into the mountains this week for a few days and discovered a great new gallery in Wanaka. It's called The Picture Lounge and features a collection of New Zealand's best photographers including beautiful fine art prints from Chris McLennan, Jackie Rankin, Craig Potton and a bunch of other very talented lenspeople. Check it out at 48 Helwick Street, or here.
Only small pulses of swell on both coasts this week - time to fix those dings, order that big wave board, book an Indo boat trip or get your new wettie in time for the first swells of winter ...
See you at the beach ...
