Where is all the snow? I love the stuff. It's the icing on the cake when you live in Dunedin and a dream for a photographer, because it fills in all the shadows and smooths out the city's wrinkles.
I'm also desperate to have one of those surfs where you crunch through the snow on the way to the shoreline. I came close at Blackhead Beach a few weeks back, but it was permafrost so doesn't quite count.
If someone had told you on Saturday that it was the middle of winter would you have believed them? I counted more than 100 people on St Kilda Beach in the afternoon and every other beach was as busy as a summer's day. There were even people swimming with grins that just may have been frozen on permanently for a few hours afterward.
The surf has been small, but it's a bit of a welcome change of pace with all the usual small wave banks firing into life. I watched Smaills, Tomahawk and Middles offer fun 2-3 foot punchy waves for the select few who had the tides dialled. No doubt other places up and down the coast held a few fun sessions. It's pretty easy to get excited when the water is crystal clear, as blue as the tropics and the swell has come from miles away and is ruler perfect when it trips over the sand banks.
We hope you like this week's collection of images – all shot on the new Eos 5D MkIII, which is proving to be a pretty amazing little camera. You get attached to the cameras you spend so much time creating images with and it does seem that each model has its own personality. If it was a dog then I think the Eos 5D MkIII would be a Border collie – it's a an agile worker, loyal when it counts, but with enough tricks up its sleeve to keep me exploring new angles and techniques. That's the best thing about photography – just like surfing – the learning curve will last a lifetime and that's pretty cool.
Lots of wind coming for the rest of the week so keep an eye out for sheltered nooks along the coastline with some swell.
