Spring is here and it already has that warm, salty smell to it that hints that summer is just around the corner.
We've had to set our alarm clock earlier and earlier to keep ahead of the sunrises this past week, but at the other end of the day that has meant the return of the magnificent after work surf. Tradies that knock-off at 4pm can now enjoy a decent session in the surf before the close of day. Very soon the office-bound surfers committed to the 5pm bell will be able to wash the stress away as well. There is nothing quite like an after work rinse in the ocean with a few playful waves thrown in.
This past weekend we scuttled out the back door and went skiing at Treble Cone and Cardrona. The plan was to ski in T-shirts like you'd imagined any good spring ski experience, but it was a challenging few days with lots of snow falling. That is a good thing for the fields – TC had more than 65cm over the weekend, which will ensure a good lengthy spring season.
While up in the hills we stayed with my mate Kenny Mutton. He is a great photographer, mad kayaker and stunt man. He always has some good stories and he entertained us with a few moves from when he played a sword-wielding dwarf for PJ's latest flick. He is the first six-foot-tall dwarf I have ever known.
If it wasn't for Kenny I may very well have had a proper job and earned decent money. He inspired me to shoot photos, chase my dreams and live my life to the fullest. I'm very grateful for that. If you are ever in the Bay of Plenty in summer then look him up – he will take you kayaking on one of the most amazing rivers in the country.
