What happens when you get four of New Zealand's best surfers and throw them in a Spaceship for 10 days in Dunedin's waves? Well, we're not exactly sure either, but luckily filmmaker Damon Meade, of LongWhiteCloud.TV, has been capturing every moment as Maz Quinn, Bobby Hansen, Luke Cederman and Matt Scorringe join the locals in tearing the lineups apart.
We managed to catch up with the lads on the south coast this week. It was a rainy day with howling souwesterlies in the morning and howling norwesterlies by mid-afternoon and then howling southerlies again by evening. Despite the rain and psycho winds the four surfers put on a display of performance surfing that was laced with huge aerials and punts. I have no idea how they generate the sort of speed to boost twice the wave's height out the top, but they do it with apparent ease.
We also had the pleasure of hanging with Surfing World writer Jock Serong and Australasian Surf Business Magazine publisher Keith Curtain this week. They were in town to get better acquanited with the Dunedin surf industry and Dunedin's breweries. They weaved between Emerson's, Speight's and Green Man's sampling rooms by night and explored the coastline by day. They visited various shapers around the city including Skep (pictured below).
Skep's method for creating wooden surf boards by shaping closed cell foam and then laminating it with beautiful wood veneer was a highlight for them. Skep himself, was also a highlight. The path he has taken to get to where he is now with his boards, surfing and life is an interesting tale woven with copious amounts of number eight wire and sheer determination. His boards are art merged with performance and that is a pretty epic combination.
Sunshine is scheduled to return this week so wheel out the barbeque and prepare to toast the spring.
