Like most people I don't like public speaking or being the centre of attention, but I really wanted to say a few words at the launch of Dunedin Light Seasons at Hotel St Clair last Tuesday. Instead, I got pinned down to sign more books than I realised possible. The overwhelming support was humbling.
The thing is a book project like Seasons does not come down to one person – it is the creation of many, many people. If Josh Jenkins and Tourism Dunedin had not seen the potential of the Dunedin Light project 18 months ago when it was just a scribble on some paper then we may never have lasted our first year. If the advertisers who support each week's report hadn't backed us then we would have folded long ago and if you and your friends hadn't subscribed to these reports then we wouldn't have the reach we are now proud to have.
Then there are all the surfers and beach users who welcome our prying lens into their recreation and daily lives. To all who have appeared in the reports, the books and the Facebook page, we thank-you.
In the background of the Dunedin Light project we have been fortunate to have received help and guidance from many people – all of whom have been keen to see the project survive and grow. That support has been heartening and we thank you all – you know who you are.
It is these beach and city communities that have made this book – we were just there to document it. Dunedin Light Seasons is a celebration of that spirit, the lifestyle and beach culture of this city.
We hope you are as proud of this slice of Dunedin life as we are.
Thanks and see you at the beach ...
