January 29th 2013: Bikinis and boardshorts

Summer! It is here in such force that I actually thought that I may have been walking on Bondi Beach this past weekend. Not just because of the countless bodies littered around the white, hot sands, but the number of people swimming, surfing or paddling around in bikinis and boardshorts.

Small swells, water like crystal and days without a cloud in the sky are what makes the Dunedin summer such a stunner. It's true, we're warmed by the technological marvels of modern wetsuits most of the year, but I challenge you all to make the most of summer – shun the wetsuit, don the bikini or boardshorts and experience the thrill of a surf or swim without the rubber. It's freedom – ask Ruby (above). She admits she is more of a snowboarder, but this Dunedin girl is pretty handy on a surfboard, too.

So chalk up a day at the beach this week (our pick is tomorrow – looking hot again) and get some beach time. You deserve it.

Not much swell on the horizon so plan a weekend to collect some kai, get the dings fixed, order that new board, fire up the barbecue or sneak up the Peninsula for a few overhead gems on lesser known banks.

Yeah, that's where we'll be.

See you at the beach!
