You might not know it to meet them, but lurking among our community are a handful of very talented surfers. They're just everyday blokes. They work everyday jobs, but when the surf is on they are the ones doing amazing things out there.
Take Lyndon Fairbairn for example. He took some time out of his day on Saturday to surf in the Otago Surfing Championships at St Clair Beach. By 3pm he'd won the Masters division. At 6pm he paddled out with Damon Phillips, Luke Murphy and Nathan Shaw for the final of the Men's Open. Twenty minutes later he had his second Otago Championship. He got out of the surf, walked across the road, had a shower and resumed his life as an unassuming family man.
Then we have a character by the name of Leroy Rust. He has just returned from Sydney, Australia, where he was a guest of Oakley. He was a finalist in the Oakley Big Wave Awards – Australasia's most prestigious big wave awards with some serious cash up for grabs. You can watch the film Ted Whitaker made of Leroy surfing the big wave in the Catlins and the session itself here (the third film gives the best impression of what these guys do). Thanks Ted for the great filmwork.
When asked why he didn't make it more common knowledge Leroy simply replied, "I didn't want to make a big fuss about it."
Big weekend this one if you like rugby: Highlanders and then the Warriors under the big roof.
