Our day job meant we had to spend a week in the North Island last week photographing some amazing athletes in a bunch of pretty cool places ... a few were almost as good as Dunedin.
So this week's report is a whirlwind tour of the North Island with some gems we discovered yesterday when our plane landed back in Otepoti.
First up on our tour was a shoot with Ruby Muir in Napier – she's an amazing trail runner, winner of the 2012 Kepler, 2013 Tarawera 100km Ultra and a lot more. She's just 21 and we were commissioned to cover her story by an Aussie magazine (will send a link once its published).
Then we went on to Taupo and Rotorua to photograph road cyclists and mountain bikers in these superheated cycling hot spots. A highlight was shooting with Gabby Molloy – she is a gifted mountain bike rider and her love of riding means great photos are hard not to make.
Finally, we slipped through to New Zealand's other surf mecca – Raglan for some long left walls at the famous points. But the swell wasn't to play the game so we went fishing instead hauling in a handful of 35-50cm snapper between Northwest squalls. Thanks to Brett and Kent for the cool experience there.
If you are a surfer travelling to New Zealand and want to maximise your wave count then you're best to plan your itinerary around Raglan and Dunedin.
Lots of mid-size south swell this week, choose your wind window and plan that board meeting.
