Just across the Maniatoto Plain from Dunedin lies a true winter playground and we spent all of last week exploring the ski fields and valleys between Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka.
The mountains are a bit like a perpetual north swell – they're loaded with great snow and prime for skiing or boarding. Imagine riding a wave that peels for 10 minutes! Treble Cone was a bit like that for us. It's the South Island's largest ski area with everything from some intense, thrilling lines on offer in the Motatapu Chutes through to some amazing learners' facilities in the Home Basin (most of which are free!). We had the whole family with us – all four assistants at once and a few green skiers, so we made the most of the great conditions on the green runs with a few exhilarating rides higher up the mountain.
Mountain culture at TC is very similar to surf culture – you work hard, collect some great moments, then drop back down to the café and enjoy a barista-made coffee as you attempt to share your experience with good friends and family. It's an excited bunch by lunchtime, entertained by the curious kea that frequent the alfresco dining area (best café views of any). The spring-like conditions we encountered just added to the experience.
If you're curious about skiing, then check it out with your family ... you can thank us later.
Okay, so we know we missed some great surf last week, but it looks like both coasts have potential again this week. Lots of sunshine for the next two days as well – lap it up – we will be.
See you at the beach ...
