What are we doing in your inbox on a Thursday? Well, last week we hosted Eugene Tan, from Aquabumps, so we rustled up some of the best surfers in town for him. Maz Quinn also flew in for the promising east swell. Usually we shoot everyone and anybody, so having a concentration of deadset rippers in the line-up meant we ended up with a lot of amazing shots – enough to warrant this special edition.
These shots come from two sessions: the first at Blackhead Beach on a peaky, junky swell that turned the lads into aerial masters. First JC Susan and Joe Leeper started launching above the lip, then Maz, Damian Phillips, Leroy Rust and Lyndon Hutton busted their wheels free. Even Josh Jenkins who was there on official Tourism Dunedin hosting duties took flight. It was one of the coolest sessions I've ever shot.
The next morning we jetted up to Aramoana where the offshore had cleaned up the swell. Greeted by 3-5 foot slightly wild-mannered peaks the team took turns chasing flaring barrel sections and rip bowls in the bright sunshine.
Maz rates this wave as one of his favourites and it was easy to see he was having fun. He's a Quiksilver ambassador so bascially all he does is free surf around the country. He's got family in Dunedin, Gisborne and Auckland so it's an easy trip for him to make south.
Maz is a very quiet guy, preferring to let his surfing do the talking – and if you get the chance it is amazing to watch. His turns are next level and if he eyes the lip, lookout. Uge described him as "surfing royalty" in New Zealand. Pretty fair call we say.
Waves tomorrow, before a high slides over and the swell evaporates across the weekend. Hit the mountains, we are.
See you on the hill ...
