We should have known that a photo shoot with local trail runner Whitney Dagg, would involve sweat, mud and some amazing vistas above the Cloud Forests of Leith.
By day, Whitney is a barista working her magic on a steady stream of coffees at the Marbecks café. By night she studies nutrition and dietetics and somewhere in between she trains over long distances in the hills surrounding the city. This past few months The North Face runner has even been doing some laps around our beaches in preparation for the Surf Coast Century – a 100km ultra trail run marathon being staged on the coastline around the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, this weekend.
"I'm anticipating lots of rock-hopping and stretches of beach running," she told us.
Whitney's proven herself as one of New Zealand's best trail runners and she thanks the trails around Dunedin and Otago for that. Like the Swampy Spur we stumbled up to for sunset last week – she gets to see some pretty amazing parts of this city. Put Swampy Spur in your GPS and search it out. You can thanks us later. Follow Whitney's Aussie race through her Facebook page here.
Northwest winds for the next few days and plenty of swell around ... indulge! Tomorrow's our pick – sunshine all day, 12-second period 1.8m south swell.
See you at the beach ...
