October 1st 2013: Super seeds

One of the best things about Dunedin is the fact it is an educational hub – institutions like the Otago Polytechnic, Dive Otago, the uni and other training facilities in the city pump students in one end and spit professionals out the other. During that process the students develop a relationship with the city, its wild places and the people who live here.

Most of them will leave, but a little bit of Dunedin remains in their hearts. Take Chloe Van Dyke (that's her above) for example. She studied neuroscience and then herbal medicine to gain all the skills she needed to create a health drink product called Chia. She now works alongside her dad, based in Nelson, slowly taking over the world with the super food benefits of their Chia-seed suspended drinks.

Chloe was pretty happy to be back in the deep south and even happier to see her new product being lapped up by the best cafés in town. We know she's onto it – she won the ANZ Flying Start business award earlier this year. Check out the Chia website to find out where you can buy one of their three flavours.

Half the surfers in the South Island were on to the north swell this week and most of them scored some pretty incredible waves. Always good to see the Whareakeake sweep keeping some semblance of order in the line-up.

Small waves forecast all week as this complex weather system streams through, then some decent swell coming early next week.

See you at the beach ...
