One of the great feats of surfing is to ride in the tube. It's a very specialised skill and one of the hardest to master. First you have to find a section of wave with a lip about to throw out and then you have to make your way inside this spinning vortex. Then you have to find and surf down an elusive line that will take you out to exit in a swirl of compressed seawater that we call the spit. This all happens in a matter of seconds, but time slows in the tube and the senses hit overdrive. You'll never forget a tube ride.
That is why I spend so much of my time trying to shoot waves that open up and the surfers who surf inside them. That task was made a lot easier this week thanks to the stiff offshores and small, clean south swell. A bunch of these shots come from a blue-sky session at St Kilda Beach, one of our best beachbreaks for barrels. We hope you enjoy them.
Bit of a tangle of lows in the south and west this week with a couple of northeast days in there so keep an eye on the north coast and make the most of this small swell on the south. Don't expect too much sunshine – looking a little squirrelly for the weekend in Central and on the coast.
