Nothing beats that smell of fresh glass. The new curves, tail shape and experimental volume placement make your hands sweat and your mind buzz. A new surfboard promises new adventures, new experiences and the possibility to push your surfing a little further along in this journey we call life. It's as much a motivational tool as it is something to stand on in the ocean. It's another reason to get out of bed earlier, drive further and surf longer.
We often compare surfing to photography and in this instance it's exactly the same. New glass (or a lens as they are traditionally referred to) has the ability to motivate like nothing else. Especially with the advances in technology being used in the new equipment produced by the industry leaders. While I was having some work done to my EF70-200mm f2.8L series lens recently the team at Canon NZ lent me one of the new 70-200s – with image stabiliser and a whole new build. It has been raved about from photographers throughout the world so to get to play with it this week was very exciting. To be able to handhold a 200mm lens at 1/60th of a second and capture a sharp image time after time was a new experience for me. It opens up opportunities like this low-light shot above of sunlight bursting through trees on the ridgeline of Otago Peninsula.
Sometimes a little bit of glass is all you need to re-energise and rethink the way you shoot and that's always a good thing in photography.
Lots of action in the Tasman Sea and southern ocean this week should produce some decent southwest swell by the weekend. Stable weather for the next few days in the mountains if you're planning some adventure.
