During my weekly rounds looking for a sneaky surf this past week I stumbled across a couple of Mount Maunganui lads, turned Otago Uni students/surfers, having a field day in some small St Kilda peaks.
Jonas Tawharu is a pretty special kind of surfer – rips on a thruster, but became addicted to the nuances of twin-fin surfing after winning a local twin-fin comp on what can only be described as a fridge door. It was his first foray into twin fins and he liked it ... by the end of that final. Judging by this recent edit he even took his twin-fin passion through Indonesia with him.
So in the small waves of St Kilda it was no surprise to see him burying his twinny's rails and pulling off some pretty impressive airs – landing a couple cleanly as well.
Also from the Mount was Andrew Fraser-Mackenzie, or Puntlord as he is known on Instagram. He's another young surfer breaking the mould and just surfing on instinct. That's always great to see and it means the walls around our coastline never get the same treatment more than once.
To have these two going hammer and tongs on two neighbouring peaks was a pretty special sight. Certainly there's a freshness to their approach and that's a good thing for all of us.
See you at the beach .. Derek
PS We've got a new and very exciting advertising partner coming aboard with Box of Light. All will be revealed next week, but for now ... just make sure your passport is up to date. Stay tuned ...
