March 3rd 2020: Surprise swell

With my wings clipped by a crazy desk-bound workload this week I have to say I really appreciate swell and favourable winds on the weekends. Especially with a north swell on a Saturday and then a surprise south swell on a Sunday, both accompanied by light offshores. It doesn't get much better than that.

We had so many waves the vibe in the water was actually a pretty good one – even if the glassy conditions at St Clair had attracted more than 100 surfers by around mid-morning on Sunday. It was all on. Esplanade Surf School had a steady stream of newcomers, the groms were charging, the world's best kneelos were going nuts and the restaurants were overflowing.

The entire West Coast was alight with pumping waves from Greymouth to Raglan and on to Ahipara from this hit of swell. The wrap into Otago's coastline was a real bonus. Let's hope autumn continues on this path. Yep, that's right, we're officially on the otherside of summer. Ouch.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS In case you were wondering why there are so many surfers running around Dunedin with oversized boards, flippers and rashed up knees, we're currently hosting the 2020 Emerson's World Kneeboard Championships. It's a pretty crazy sport with these guys renowned for their ability to tuck into even the pinchiest barrels. Here's all the info you might need to track them around our beaches this week. They'll be at Aramoana today.
