October 13th 2026: Jinx

Wow, these past few days felt like summer. Scorching heat, crystal-clear water, cloudless skies ... well, once the sea fog burnt through ... it has certainly felt like summer is on its way in Dunedin.

I don't want to jinx it, but this could bode well for a summer of warm weather and sunshine in the south. That's what happened way back when we last had an El Niño weather pattern. It means more proper south swells, too. Man, I have missed those long-lived ground swells that carry Sub-Antarctic energy directly into our city beaches. They can last for days and turn most of our beaches into playgrounds.

Finding a window to surf between now and Christmas will be tricky, with my calendar packed with commercial and editorial shoots. I love having all of that ahead of me, but it does mean a lot of travel and a slim chance I will get on the right rhythm to connect with the best surf windows in the south or up in the North Island.

That won't stop me from trying, of course.

See you at the beach, Derek
